Expeditions

Geoff’s experience as an Expedition Leader and Polar Educator spans three decades and more than 125 expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as numerous journeys to other fascinating and remote corners of the planet.

Geoff charting map.

Much has changed since Geoff led the first Students on Ice (SOI) youth expedition in 2000. The Arctic and Antarctic are on the front lines of social, environmental, political, and economic change and the work of the SOI Foundation in connecting our youth to the land and people of these vibrant regions of ourplanet has become more important than ever before

.

Geoff’s vision of inspiring and empowering informed and impassioned young leaders has led his Foundation to embrace a holistic approach to learning – experiencing the Arctic and Antarctic with all senses and across not only the sciences but also culture, history and the arts. Each expedition brings together a global cohort of students and staff including Indigenous youth participants, program leads, partners, educators and mentors. This enables cross-cultural learning and a greater understanding of, and appreciation for our diversity, our environment, and how we can work together towards a healthy and sustainable future.

Ocean Conservation Expedition: September 7-30, 2022 – Full Recap

We set off aboard the now Indigenous-owned vessel, MV Polar Prince, the same beloved icebreaker that carried us from coast to coast to coast on the historic Canada C3 expedition in 2017. Five years later, this Ocean Conservation expedition was a unique opportunity to connect diverse Canadians and organizations working on ocean issues, including ocean conservation, ocean literacy and a sustainable blue economy. Literally and figuratively, it provided a vessel for research and stewardship of coastal and marine environments, including marine protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures.

“The polar regions have risen to the top of environmental concerns. Endowed with unique and newly endangered life forms and subject to exceptionally rapid climate change, the Antarctic and Arctic regions have a great importance for the generations immediately ahead. I’m glad that Students on Ice is leading the kind of environmental education most needed.”

“Students on Ice is an outstanding educational program. Just one of their shipboard expeditions to the polar regions equals two or three academic courses in a traditional university setting. The Arctic and Antarctic are where major changes in our global environment are first being seen. I am proud and honoured to participate in this unique shipboard program.”
